Offering family dining in a formal setting, Euro Diner is a welcome addition to Shunyi. Part of a chain of restaurants running from New York to Beijing, Euro Diner offers a menu sampling the best of European cuisine. A non-smoking environment and playhouse on the first floor keep the kiddies happy, while adults dine on white table clothes with silver candle sticks.

The potatoes brava (30 yuan) are a safe and delicious start to what can add up to an eclectic meal (sausage from Germany, ravioli from Italy, veal from France¡ªthere is something for every type of diner on the menu). The friendly, English-speaking servers are more than happy to bring an extra helping of the sweet and spicy red sauce to pour over the crispy wedges. The domestic fois gras (45 yuan) is accompanied by a delightful mango chutney that thankfully overpowers the marmite-like sauce drizzled over the toast.

For mains, the pork ribs (75 yuan) arrive as a daunting slab that dominates the plate. The meat was succulent, falling off the bone with a touch of the fork, and comes swathed in a dark sauce tinged with rosemary. For lighter fare, opt for the fresh duck breast sweetened by a passion fruit sauce (85 yuan). The supple slices of meat mix nicely with the burst of flavor from the passion fruit. If there is any room for dessert, try the chocolate suffle (35 yuan), great for the whole family.
