A big fire that heavily damaged a large synagogue in Geneva last week was caused by arson, a Swiss official said on Friday.

"The cause of the fire was criminal," said Michel Graber, the magistrate who is responsible for the investigation into the May 24 fire, which caused serious damage to the interior of the Hekhal Haness Synagogue.

In a written statement, Graber ruled out the possibility that the fire was caused by an accident or technical problem.

He said a cigarette butt had been found at the scene of the fire and investigators were trying to carry out DNA analysis.

The May 24 fire had raised fears that it might have been an anti-Semitic attack, as it happened on a Jewish holiday.
