Under a contract signed in Lusaka Thursday a Chinese corporation will
construct a substation as part of the power supply project for Lumwana copper
mine in Zambia's Northwestern Province.
China Henan International
Corporation won the bid to construct the substation, which is scheduled to be
completed within 15 months, at the cost of 23 million U.S. dollars.
Development of 330 kv lines and substation is required in order to
provide power supply to the mine, which is under construction and expected to
become the largest copper mine in Africa upon its full completion by 2009.
Due to the urgency that the mine has indicated on their project, Zambia
Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has decided to divide the power supply
works into two contracts. These will be a 330 kv transmission line contract and
a substation contract, ZESCO managing director Rhodnie Sisala said at the
signing ceremony held here Thursday.
This substation will also in future
become a point of further interconnection between the power systems of the
Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.
Sisala said that "this project
will be of great socio-economic benefit to Northwestern Province which has
abundant natural resources."
One major drawback in the development of
all these agricultural and tourism resources has always been the absence
of adequate and reliable electric power, he said.
The development of
power infrastructure which is taking place will go a long way in stimulating
economic development in the province, he said.
The ZESCO managing
director cited some projects undertaken by the Chinese corporation in Zambia and
said "we as ZESCO are therefore very pleased to be working with a company that
has a very good record of handling difficult projects."
