Superman is engaged ¡ª but not to Lois Lane. Brandon Routh, who donned the red cape in the superhero's recent bigscreen outing, has proposed to his girlfriend.

The 26-year-old actor popped the question to actress Courtney Ford earlier in August with a ring from Neil Lane, the preferred Los Angeles jeweller for celebrities.

"They are very happy," said Routh's rep, Kacey Spies, of the couple who have been dating for three years.

Although no wedding date has been set, they plan to marry towards the end of next year, during the northern hemisphere's autumn.

Routh met his 28-year-old fiancee while he was working as a bartender at the trendy Hollywood bowling alley Lucky Strike. Ford's brother had his wedding rehearsal dinner party at the venue.

The 'Superman Returns' actor called his future wife his "personal kryptonite", referring to the single substance that can weaken Superman.

"She brings me to my knees," he told People.

The couple also told the magazine they love watching DVDs ¡ª especially the bonus features ¡ª and that "nightly phone calls" helped them survive five months apart while Routh was filming in Australia.

Prior to his turn as Superman/Clark Kent, Routh has appeared on TV shows like 'Gilmore Girls', 'Cold Case', 'Will & Grace' and the soapie 'One Life To Live'.

A second Superman movie is expected in 2009.

Ford has been less successful with appearances in shows like 'Profiler', 'Threat Matrix' and 'Moesha'.

The couple are co-starring in 'Denial', a short thriller that debuted at the CineVegas Film Festival in July.
