Tomorrow, expatriate families especially those with two to eight-year-olds are invited on an exciting free one-day tour of the famous ancient water town of Zhujiajiao.
The water town located in Shanghai's Qingpu District features poetic natural landscapes and old-style architecture. The zigzag of old wooden, stone and marble bridges date back more than 400 years ago.
The streams, graceful courtyard houses and delicious dishes and desserts combine to present a strong local flavor that's very different from that of the downtown concrete jungle.
In addition to sightseeing, foreign families can enjoy dazzling puppet shows and learn to make puppet toys at the newly-built Western International School of Shanghai, the organizer of the event.
"We understand that families new to Shanghai can feel a bit 'at sea' at first and this activity may give people an opportunity to meet other families and to feel connected," says Leslie Tam, the school's director of admissions. "We are also trying to help introduce newcomer families to some interesting aspects of Chinese culture."
Tam notes that the best way for "laowai" to adapt is to remember that why they came here is to experience a new part of the world with a rich and fascinating culture.
"One can't get discouraged by the absence of certain foods or appliances," he adds. "Those things are minor in comparison with what one can find here that can never be found back home. This is why one of our major goals as a school is to immerse students in the culture and language of China."
The one-day schedule includes a 9am pickup at People's Square, boat ride at Zhujiajiao, lunch and cultural activities, and then a visit to the school.
Families also have the opportunity to meet the school faculty and will be presented with surprising gifts.
