BEIJING -- The government of the United States on Friday offered US$250,000 as disaster relief for China's typhoon-hit southeast Chinese provinces.
The US Red Cross Society also donated extra US$50,000 for the disaster at a donation ceremony held in the US Embassy in Beijing on Friday.
The donations will be used for building makeshift houses and purchasing living necessities for typhoon-affected victims, said an official from the US embassy.
In a phone talk between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his US counterpart George W. Bush on Monday, Bush extended his condolences over China's losses sustained when a recent typhoon struck some coastal provinces in southeast China, for which President Hu expressed his thanks.
Typhoon Saomai, the strongest to hit China in half a century, left at least 441 dead, including 246 in Fujian, 193 in eastern Zhejiang Province and two in Jiangxi Province.
In Zhejiang, one of the two worst-hit provinces, 1,036 schools were affected by Saomai, with school buildings covering 145,300 square meters collapsed, incurring losses of 217 million yuan (US$27 million).
